Which market are you reading?
Basketball markets can cover the winner, winning margin or total points. Whether overtime is included depends on the market and applicable rules: do not infer it simply from the name of the sport.
Distinctions to check
A handicap notionally adds or subtracts points from a team’s score. A half-point line avoids a tie in the adjusted result, whereas a whole-number line may allow a refund. For player statistics, check the conditions relating to participation.
An example to explain the concept
At a −4.5 handicap, a team winning by five points covers the line; winning by four does not. This illustrates market arithmetic, not a prediction.
Terms and settlement
Player statistics can be revised; identify the source used for settlement. The bookmaker’s rules specify how an official result applies to the market. Later result corrections may be subject to time limits: do not infer settlement solely from a result published elsewhere.
Compare like with like
Keep the event, period of play, selection and line identical. Record the observation time as well: prices viewed at different times are not a simultaneous comparison. Higher odds do not automatically compensate for different rules or conditions.
