Football: a guide to the markets

Understand match results, goals and handicaps without confusing regulation time with qualification.

Which market are you reading?

A 1X2 market covers a home win, a draw or an away win. It is not equivalent to qualification: a team can progress after extra time or penalties without winning in regulation time.

Distinctions to check

For goal totals, read the line and period carefully. “Over 2.5 goals” for a full match requires at least three goals in the period defined by the rules; first-half odds cover a different interval. Cards, corners and goalscorers have additional counting rules.

An example to explain the concept

A match finishes 1–1 and one team progresses on penalties. The regulation-time 1X2 result remains a draw, while the qualification market can have a winner. Do not compare the two prices as though they refer to the same outcome.

Terms and settlement

Market rules define the relevant period: explicitly check the treatment of stoppage time, extra time and penalties. The bookmaker’s rules specify how an official result applies to the market. Later result corrections may be subject to time limits: do not infer settlement solely from a result published elsewhere.

Compare like with like

Keep the event, period of play, selection and line identical. Record the observation time as well: prices viewed at different times are not a simultaneous comparison. Higher odds do not automatically compensate for different rules or conditions.

From the guide to the sources

For schedules and formats, consult the official source for the sport or event. For settlement, read the rules of the particular market. The examples on this page are hypothetical, not live results.
