What decimal odds mean
Decimal odds multiply the stake to give the gross return for a winning outcome. A €10 stake at 2.50 returns €25, including the original €10. Profit before any costs is €15.
Implied probability
The reciprocal of decimal odds gives an implied probability: 1 divided by 2.50 equals 0.40, or 40%. This mathematical conversion does not establish that the event actually has that probability.
The market margin
For mutually exclusive and exhaustive outcomes, the sum of the reciprocals of the odds can exceed 100%. The excess is called the overround. It is not automatically the bookmaker’s actual profit, which also depends on the distribution of stakes.
Fractional and American odds
Fractional odds of 3/2 express 3 units of profit for every 2 units staked; their decimal equivalent is 2.50. American odds of +150 express 150 units of profit for 100 staked. The website’s converter switches between these formats.
Limits of the calculation
The simple calculation excludes commission, taxes, specific rounding rules and partial settlement. Displayed amounts are mathematical examples, not predictions or promises of a return.
About the examples
Numerical examples are illustrative calculations. The terms of the individual service take precedence over general descriptions.
