Volleyball: a guide to the markets

Winners, sets and points: compare markets using the same unit.

Which market are you reading?

Volleyball markets can concern the full match, a particular set or points. A handicap expressed in sets is not equivalent to one expressed in points.

Distinctions to check

Match format and treatment of the deciding set affect totals. Before using statistics from previous matches, check that their formats are comparable. Indoor volleyball and beach volleyball should not be treated as having identical rules.

An example to explain the concept

A 3–1 win covers a −1.5-set handicap; a 3–2 win does not. Total points can follow a very different pattern from the simple set score.

Terms and settlement

Check whether the market covers the full match, a specific set or a segment of play. The bookmaker’s rules specify how an official result applies to the market. Later result corrections may be subject to time limits: do not infer settlement solely from a result published elsewhere.

Compare like with like

Keep the event, period of play, selection and line identical. Record the observation time as well: prices viewed at different times are not a simultaneous comparison. Higher odds do not automatically compensate for different rules or conditions.

From the guide to the sources

For schedules and formats, consult the official source for the sport or event. For settlement, read the rules of the particular market. The examples on this page are hypothetical, not live results.
